Gas Pipelines:- long, thin, bombs?
Gas pipelines attract substantial reseach to improve safety and cut costs. They operate closer to their nominal strength limit than any other large engineering components. But what is their actual strength? Amazingly, the strength of even a simple symetrical structure like a pipe is the subject of much contention. This is a non-technical talk about their ultimate strength, and why we should study sausages more closely.
